Since 1958 to 1971, 5 cases of leukodystrophy, strictly selected on clinical bases alone, were reported. Age was from 10 months to 18 years, and age of onset was 3 months to 12 years. Male female ratio was 4 to 1. Initial symptoms were convulsion 3 cases, mental deficiency 1 case and tremor 1 case. Symptoms were most commonly mental deterioration and convulsion, followed by pyramidal and extrapyramidal symptoms especially the latter, aphasia, hypotonia, quadripresis and so on.
Differential diagnosis from lipoidosis, enborn error of metabolism, cerebellar ataxia, Hallervordan Spatz syndrome and other causes of mental deficiency were intensely studied.
More cases of leukodystrophy may be discovered when there are more neurologists in this country.
